British Columbia, an area of amazing diversity, spanning more than 360,000 square miles, much of it in mountainous regions with few, if any, roads.
One of its more spectacular tracts, and the most stunning way of experiencing the province's westerly region is by taking the incomparable ferry journey from Vancouver Island through the channels of the Inside Passage as they mimic the coastline from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. The lush vegetation of Vancouver Island, surrounded by Pacific waters, attests to a mild climate with pleasantly warm summers all along the coast, while over in the south-eastern corner lies the sheltered Okanagan Valley, the prosperous wine and fruit-growing region, whose lakeside habitations delight in such names as Peachland. In the mountainous heartland of the province, the air is crisp and refreshing, and summer days (late April to mid October) frequently sparkle with blue-sky clarity. Highlights of this region include the delightful, islanddotted ferry crossing from the mainland to Vancouver Island; the island's pleasingly old-fashioned city of Victoria; the floral exuberance of Butchart Gardens; Okanagan's vineyards; the charming mountain resort of Whistler and, of course, Vancouver city itself. |
