The Deep South, with a character and air of mystery all of its own, the Deep South has always been a very separate part of America, with its distinctive latin culture, flavoursome cajun cooking, jazzy music and - if its playwrights and novelists are to be believed - steamy passions smouldering under its laid-back lifestyle. You will be enchanted as much by the friendliness as the ‘foreignness' of its engaging people. Some lovely tours include our peerless Southern Spectacular, which sweeps down from Washington to Dallas through Virginia's glorious countryside and the picturesque early settlements of Jamestown and 18th century Williamsburg, to the elegance of those classic coastal cities of Charleston and Savannah, and on via ‘Gone With the Wind' territory to the wide open spaces of Texas, the ‘Big Country'. Or it can, to equal advantage, be taken in reverse.
Nashville and Memphis are a classic combination, of which we do great justice on our popular two centre holiday, by including the best excursions and allowing ample free time for personal exploration. Spring, summer and autumn see abundant flowering in the tropical gardens between the Mississippi and Atlantic coastline, and we experience this as well on Eastern Elegance and Southern Style by visiting the Magnolia Plantation's gardens which boasts a year round spectacle of colour. Included in this tour is a premier collection of sophisticated cities reached by using the comfort & style of travelling by rail and road. Further west, our increasingly popular and leisurely Texas Ranger tour enters the sunny embrace of that vast state of cattlemen and oil tycoons, passing time in delightful San Antonio with its lovely riverwalk, en route to Dallas and Amarillo, crossing New Mexico for a relaxed conclusion at the desert resort of Scottsdale. New Mexico is given the more detailed attention it certainly merits in American Rockies and New Mexico, which follows that great mountain range into the river valley of the Rio Grande, revealing its ancient treasures, lovely adobe houses, the ruins of Spanish grandeur and one of the great birdlife sanctuaries. Florida in the winter is simply grand, the low humidity presenting weather akin to a glorious British summer, and to complement our highly appreciated Florida Fun In The Sun tour. |
