New England's villages are now deservedly worldfamous. But just across the border in Canada is a cluster of villages in a setting of idyllic pastoral scenery that is little known to tourists outside Eastern Canada itself. This is the Eastern Townships, a distinctly different part of Quebec east of Montreal.
Climate-wise, this is the balmiest corner of the province and boating, sailing, golfing and bicycling are among the summer pursuits. With its marvellous village resorts, craft shops and inviting inns, the Eastern Townships are an experience to savour. Highlights are North Hatley with its pier extending into the lake; Magog with its bistros, boutiques and art galleries; Knowlton with its antiques and main street of rusticated buildings; Sutton with its commanding heights; and the journey on a still unmade road with stunning views to Freligsburg, enchantingly positioned in the Brochets River valley near Mt. Pinacle. |
