The beautiful state of Oregon, with its rugged coastline and inland farmlands framed by lakes and mountains, is fully explored in our increasingly popular Oregon Trail holiday during which, among many highlights, we visit the sea lions in their caves. It begins in the peerless city of San Francisco and proceeds into Washington State, passing between the mountains of the Coast Range and the glorious Cascades to Seattle, yet another exceptionally attractive waterside city.
The heartland of America contains the Rocky Mountains and great national parks, the mighty Missouri and Mississippi rivers and lively cities such as Denver, Kansas City and St. Louis, as well as romantic Chicago, its impressive skyline a handsome testament to a dynamic present and notorious past of gangsters, racketeers and dodgy politicians, when bootleg money flowed through the city and oiled the wheels of business. From the Canadian border downward this is a wonderful area for touring from spring to autumn. However dubious the source of its past wealth, which makes it the richest centre of the arts in America after New York, Chicago has prospered in more legitimate ways in the new High Tech environment, with the fine new skyscrapers (including two of the world's tallest) lending extra beauty to the architectural mix of lakeside setting. Its colourful past gives the muchrejuvenated city a slightly raffish air, with a nightlife among the most exciting in America - comedy clubs jostling for attention with sophisticated jazz venues, theatre, concerts and a great array of restaurants. It is here that our Chicago and the Lakelands and Ol' Man River holidays commence. The colossal range of Rockies, descending from Alaska into New Mexico, is seen in much of its glory on our two national parks tours, both of which feature the mountain vistas of Yellowstone, its rolling hillsides festooned with wild flowers and its vast acres hospitable to bears, elk, moose, wolves and bison. The product of a volcanic eruption one thousand years ago, that spewed out 35 trillion cubic feet of debris, its cauldrons and geysers were named in the 19th century as Colter's Hell, after one of its early explorers. But it wasn't long before President Grant recognised the treasure it contained and declared it America's first national park in 1872. From here we reach the lofty pinnacles and glittering glaciers of Grand Teton Park travelling along the Rockefeller Parkway the length of the valley between Gros Ventre Mountains and the Tetons, from which vantage point one enjoys dramatic views of the entire length of the latter range. The Awe-Inspiring National Parks starts in the famous Black Hills of Dakota, in the midst of which Mt. Rushmore, with its presidential carvings, presides majestically, and it concludes with the Grand Canyon and a stay in the desert paradise of Scottsdale. More is revealed in our extended and enhanced Western Splendour holiday, which now also takes in fabulous Mesa Verde National Park, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Canyon De Chelly. Together with the National Parks of Glacier, Yellowstone and Arches, to name a few and a conclusion in the delightful desert oasis of Palm Springs, this is a truly comprehensive holiday. Our Wild West Adventure showcases the huge array of natural wonders of Arizona, the Grand Canyon State, together with the wild west of Tombstone and the OK Corral. Train buffs will want to experience our Great American Railtour, which includes five train journeys from old to new, through the fantastic scenery of Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. The Mississippi supplies a unifying theme for ‘Ol Man River, taking us back to the days when much of the country's livelihood depended on the movement of goods by water and there sprang up many attractive riverside towns whose entertainment was provided by the travelling showboats. Another fascinating city is St. Louis with its riverside setting, lively open-air lifestyle and world-famous botanical gardens. Our tour take us there, as well as to Kansas City which, in spite of huge developments in recent decades, still retains something of the air of a frontier town. Take a classic road trip on Historic Route 66 - America's Main Street, which takes you “from Chicago to LA, more than two thousand miles all the way” as celebrated in Bobby Troup's famous 1940's song “Get your kicks on Route 66”. |
