The Northern Territory is commonly referred to as Australia's Outback and encompasses the ‘Top End' and the ‘Red Centre'. Here you can experience the ‘real' Outback, breathtaking National Parks, images of early Australia, the culture of the indigenous people, together with vibrant and modern towns.
Within these areas are two of the country's most famous natural creations, Ayers Rock (Uluru) and Kakadu National Park, both World Heritage sites. It is home to an array of diverse landscapes from rock formations, gorges, canyons, waterfalls, swamps and rivers. All of this amongst huge expanses of bush and desert, joined only by long, never ending dusty roads, together with the most magnificent variety of flora and fauna, making every corner turned a new experience. Approximately five hours drive from Ayers Rock is the town of Alice Springs; originally founded in 1888, after formerly existing as a staging point for the overland telegraph line. Darwin, the most northerly of Australia's towns, has become a modern and thriving town and is the ideal base for those who wish to visit the spectacular National Parks which exist in the Top End. Much of Kakadu is Aboriginal land with rangers assisting in the protection of the park whilst simultaneously teaching visitors the significance of the various natural features. The Top End is abundant with wildlife, the most famous of which must be the crocodile. Birdlife is colourful and plentiful especially in the wetlands. |
