The 'Seven Wonders of the World’ is a widely known list that features seven extraordinary constructions from around the world. In 2001 a Swiss company, New Open World Corporation, decided to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments. The results were announced on July 7, 2007 and are as follows:

The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall is the world's longest man made structure that stretches over approximately 6,400 km (4,000 miles) along an arc that roughly follows the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. It is composed of many smaller walls combined together and is the largest man made structure ever built in terms of surface area and mass.
City Of Petra, Jordan
Petra is an archaeological site in Jordan that is well known for having many stone structures carved into the rock. The site remained hidden from the western world until 1812 when it was discovered by a Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was also famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a sonnet by John William Burgon.
The city was made famous again when it featured in Steven Speilberg's "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" film which starred Harrison Ford as the swash buckling archaeologist Indiana Jones.The site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and was described as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".
Christ the Redeemer, Brazil
Christ the Redeemer, is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that stands approximately 38 metres tall .It is located at the peak of the Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. The statue, which took five years to build , has a small chapel in the base and has become a symbol of Rio and Brazil.
As a vantage point it offers superb views of downtown Rio de Janeiro, the bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches.
Machu Piccu, Peru
Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca city located on a mountain in Peru,. It remained mainly forgotten by the west for centuries until its existence was officially confirmed by archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911,. Machu Picchu is probably the most well known symbol of the Inca Empire and is often referred to as "The Lost City of the Incas". The site was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1983 when it was described as "an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization".
Chichen Itza, Mexico
Chichen Itza means "Mouth of the well of the Itza people". and is best preserved of the many Mayan ruins in Mexico and Central America .The site displays the most impressive selection of architectural styles in Mexico and perfectly showcases the engineering and construction skills of the Mayan people many of whom, scholars believe, thrived from about 200 AD to 1000 AD
'Mexican President Felipe Calderón said that the fact that the Chichen Itza was named as a new wonder of the world is a "reflection of the great strength of our identity and our past
".
The Colosseum, Italy
The Colosseum is the most famous amphitheatre in the centre of Rome and was the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder and perfectly demonstrates the extraordinary building capabilities of the Roman Empire The Colosseum was a gift to the Roman people from their rulers as a way of making amends for the ruthlessness of emperor Nero.Although now in ruins, the Colosseum has long been seen as a symbol of Ancient Rome and is one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.
The Taj Mahal, India
The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous of mausoleums located in Agra, India which was commissioned by The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife. The Taj Mahal is generally considered the most beautiful of the monuments built by the Mughals and is a combination of Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage”.
