Central Asia Holidays - Sri Lanka Holidays

A nation of proud and openly welcoming people, many of Sri Lanka's modern day characteristics and traditions are inherited from its British Colonial past. However the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura located in the north are a wondrous illustration of early civilisations, while the summit of Sigiriya, a rock reaching 600ft above the surrounding jungle, is the breathtaking location for the palace of King Kassapa who reigned 477-495 AD.

Colombo • Habarana • Polonnaruwa • Anuradhapura • Sigiriya • Dambulla • Kandy • Pinnawela • Nuwara Eliya • Bentota

Today visitors flock to Kandy's Temple of the Tooth containing the most sacred relic of Buddhism. Located close by is Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, which rescues and rears abandoned or injured baby elephants. The noble elephant, one of Sri Lanka's most famous residents, can also be spotted living naturally in the various national parks. Tea plantations decorate the hillsides, stippled with the headscarves of the hundreds of tea pickers, collecting infinite quantities of tea leaves for export. At the foot of Mount Pidurutalagala is the colonial town of Nuwara Eliya, with the British influence still evident in the Victorian and Tudor style homes.

Colombo has long been a flourishing seaport and today is a bustling capital. Located on the western coast, south of Colombo, Bentota provides the opportunity for a welcome rest from the hubbub of Sri Lankan cities and an ideal way to conclude your holiday.
