Victoria was formed in 1851, when it broke away from New South Wales during the gold rush days and throughout this State evidence can be seen of those exciting pioneering days, when gold was discovered.
Rolling valleys, agricultural landscape and numerous national parks lend to its naming as the ‘Garden State'. Nearly everything to see and do in Victoria is within a few hour's drive of Melbourne. Victoria's elegant capital city, situated on the banks of the Yarra River, gives the impression of being a city unhurried with a relaxed ambience. However this State is much more than its capital; Phillip Island, where the Fairy Penguins begin their nightly ritual of leaving the ocean for their burrows, the Dandenong Mountains, Puffing Billy, Australia's oldest narrowgauge steam train and the Great Ocean Road, one of the world's most spectacular drives, winding beside quiet bays, pounding surf beaches, tranquil forests, caves, gorges and blowholes. |
